The kids got out of school last Thursday and Friday afternoon we pointed the motorhome to Dunn, NC to visit family. The trip is about 5 hours and was our longest trip so far. I am happy to say that it was uneventful and we made it without incident. We arrived late Friday night and had dinner at Cracker Barrel.

For the most part we have spent our spring break simply hanging out with family. Saturday we headed over to Sherry’s Bakery for a hamburger and dessert. After eating Polly and my mom headed to the outlet malls for some shopping. I held the recliner down while taking a nap:) Sunday we headed to church and then I worked on the motorhome all afternoon. I washed the motorhome then did some maintenance by checking and caulking the roof and sides. I was exhausted by the end of the day.

Monday I went to visit my 91 year old Grandmother in the nursing home. It was certainly good to see her again. Later that night we had dinner with the Faircloths who are really good friends of ours. You may remember them from our Myrtle Beach Trip last summer.

We are now planning to leave Wednesday morning and head to Myrtle Beach, SC for the rest of the week.  We are taking my mom who has never done anything resembling camping before so this should be interesting.  We will bring her back to Dunn on Saturday and then head back to the Asheville area on Sunday.  I will post more pictures of our Myrtle Beach trip when we get back.

This past weekend we took the motorhome on its maiden voyage.  We left Friday afternoon and headed to the Charlotte area.  We actually stayed at the KOA Campground in Fort Mills, SC about 15 minutes from Charlotte.

This was our first long trip on the motorhome and the first drive with our toad in tow.  Luckily I had driven the motorhome around town some so was starting to feel good about driving this big thing.  Never the less, I was a little concerned about taking it into a larger city with heavier traffic.  But I am happy to say it went about perfect.  By the end of the weekend I was feeling like I had been driving it for years.

Probably the biggest improvement that needs to be made is the communication with my co-pilot.  Polly is in charge of helping me backup, in route directions, watching the cameras when changing lanes and looking to see if any basement doors have opened (this has happened serveral times so far). By the time we got home we were working together pretty well.

The reason we went to Charlotte was for the State Chess Tournament.  Zachary has played in this tournament for the past 3 years.  This was Caron’s first year.  Both kids have fun at the tournament and it is a good way for them to get experience in larger competitions.  I am very proud of both kids for showing very good sportsmanship.  The halls were filled with crying kids (those that lost) and upset parents.  We really didn’t care if the kids won or lost as long as they tried their best and didn’t have a melt down.

The weekend was great and it I am very happy our first outing was uneventful. Our next trip will be to see my mom in Dunn, NC in about a week.  This is about 5 hours away which is quite a bit farther than Charlotte.

Wow, can you believe that we have been living in our motorhome for a month now?  I can honestly say that everything is going great and we have not missed our house one bit.  It is amazing that you can go from 1,950 sq. ft. to less than 400 sq. ft. and not miss a thing.  Everyone is adjusting well.  The kids have their space in the living room to play and sleep. Polly and I can relax in our bedroom and watch TV and work on our computers.  We have almost everything we need in the motorhome to travel and still have space left.  I would have never believed it!!

A lot of things have happened over the past few weeks.  Here are the highlights:

  • We have had the motorhome in the shop a few times getting some of the new bugs worked out.  One of the biggest was having the front windshield replaced.
  • We had a base plate installed on the front of our new toad to allow it to be pulled behind the motorhome.  Unfortunately we now have a “rattle” in the front of the toad from where they installed it that we can not seem to fix.  We also had to purchase a braking system for the Toad to help it brake as needed.
  • We have installed our Wii for the kids to play.
  • We have finally placed our home on the market for sale.  We are getting it listed in the MLS system tomorrow.
  • We had our first snow storm in the motorhome.  For the most part everything went just fine.  Luckly we didn’t have to move the motorhome during that time because the slides were frozen and couldn’t go in.
  • We are having a hitch installed on the toad Friday so we can install a hitch mounted bike rack for our 4 bikes.

So far everything is going great.  Below are some pictures of the past snow storm.  Stay tuned for more updates.

2006 Saturn VueI am running a little behind on post so I need to catch up.  About a week ago we purchased our “Toad”.  A “Toad” is RVing speak for the car/truck that you tow behind your motorhome.  Since neither our Nissan Titan or Toyota Sienna can be towed 4 down behind our new home we had to purchase something new.

After a lot of research we discovered that the Saturn Vue is one of the most popular tow vehicles because it is lightweight, 4 door and all wheel drive.  We found an 06 Saturn Vue at the local Toyota dealer and decided to purchase it.  I have not owned a car this small in a long time so it takes a little getting use too.  But I will say it is pretty fun to drive cause it is so small and very powerfull.

We are now working on getting the Toad installed with a base plate to attach to the tow bar behind the motorhome.  We are scheduled to have that installed Monday morning.
