We left Orlando on January 19th to meet with one of our vendors in Orlando and then a quick stop in Mineola to purchase a campground membership. We drove until fatigue set in and we decided to stop at Walmart in Lake City, FL. A quick run to pickup groceries and dinner and we got ready for bed. I shared my bed with Zachary and Carson and Brian slept upfront just in case we needed to leave quickly. We felt safe since there was a security guard riding though the parking lot most of the night (at least until we went to bed at 11:00 pm). The next morning we got up for our drive to Alabama and our stay at the Styx River Resort. This would be our first campground using our new membership.

Our entry into Alabama started out rainy and it continued to rain the rest of the afternoon and night. Thursday morning we started off the day with a good morning of home school activities and then a visit to the indoor pool to work on teaching Carson to swim.  The pool was nice and the boys also enjoyed playing Play Station in the rec. room. After the pool we took a walk down to the river nature walk but we could not go down the trail since it was flooded by the Styx River.  We later found out that the road adjacent to the campground was closed due to the all the rain and the fact that the river was 11’ over the banks. On Friday we completed our week of homeschool activities and then walked down the road to evaluate the flood status.  According to the locals who live near the campground, the water had receded since it crested around noon when the water was close to 6’ high on Water World Road.  There was another weekly activity that needed to be done before leaving on Saturday for our stay at Bayou Segnette State Park in Louisiana and that was 4 loads of laundry. After laundry was completed the kids wanted to make cookies but that was not an option so we made a cake with Hershey’s chocolate frosting. After the guilt of the large piece of cake I took Bella for a walk to see if the water had receded any further since 3:00, this afternoon. The water was down to approximately 2’, measured by a gentleman who drove his F350 through the water to see if he would be able to leave in the morning. Saturday morning is our departure from Alabama for a three hour trip to Westwego, LA, across the Mississippi River from New Orleans. I am looking forward to authentic Cajun cuisine along with beignets for desert.

  1. Don’t we all love Alabama? Hey Brian, maybe you would like to check our piece of information about Alabama and it’s relation to The Doors: http://www.songplaces.com/Alabama_Song_Whiskey_Bar_/Alabama.

  2. I so want to see Alabama and all the other states in the US.

    I’m jealous!
